JUDAISM DISRUPTED

A new book by Rabbi Michael Strassfeld

Available now!

Judaism Disrupted looks at much of the tradition and finds it wanting. Prayer no longer seems to work. Jewish law seems irrelevant. Our institutions no longer attract the majority of our community. And yet, deep within the tradition is a wisdom that focuses on giving meaning and purpose to the most precious gift that we have—our lives.  While rote observance of ritual, for example, has lost its power, the need to bring awareness into our daily busy lives has never been greater. By re-envisioning a Judaism that cultivates inner qualities such as gratitude, patience and generosity, Judaism Disrupted reshapes the tradition into something radically new. By bringing into focus the ethical imperative to make the world a better and more just place for all its inhabitants, this new Judaism calls on us to live with purpose. The wisdom found in the three-thousand-year discussion of how to live such a life can help guide us on life’s journey. The practices--new, old and reconstructed-- form a technology to make meaning in our lives and in our world.

This approach can be described as radical traditionalism. While it rejects many of the paradigms and practices of traditional Judaism such as prayer and Jewish law, it looks to ancient Jewish texts to inform new principles and practices. The book excavates the sources of Judaism that have been distorted over the centuries and creates new practices drawn from contemporary spirituality and the Jewish mystical tradition.
